After a summer full of debates between KAN – the Israeli public broadcaster – and the EBU, finally, we have host city and dates. The next Eurovision will be hosted in Tel Aviv for the first time.
This is one of the few times that the contest is not hosted by the capital of the hosting country. The last time was back in 2013 when Malmö hosted the event. The reason for this selection is more political than in 2013. Because of the dispute over the capital city, Jerusalem, between the Israel and Palestine, many people express their opposition in Jerusalem hosting.
Tel Aviv seems to be the best solution for both sides. Israel keeps the contest and EBU does not have to worry about a boycott by other countries. Of course, still there is a possibility for some countries to do so, but they minimize it.
Tel Aviv is well known to the Eurovision world for it’s annual Eurovision pre-party “Israel Calling” since 2016. The city is the centre of the nightlife of the country and is considered to be the cultural capital of Israel.
The first semi-final will be on 14 May, the second on 16 May and the Grand Final on 18 May, a week later than 2018.
