A couple of hours ago, the first day of rehearsals came to an end. The first 9 acts rehearsed at the Expo Tel Aviv.
The day started with the rehearsal of Cyprus. The beautiful Tamta captivated us with her outfit, her vocals and her dance moves. Her health issues with her back don’t stop her from nail the first rehearsal.
Montenegro removed its wall – as it had in the national final – and D mol performed the revamped version of their song. Although I liked and keep like the song, I believe that something is missing from their appearance. Their clothes aren’t memorable and even though their voices sound nice together their bodies can not communicate in the same way on stage.
Finland has a big question mark right now in my notes. The song is good as it was at the national final but the staging is… let’s say the opposite of “There is no degree of space between us” – Francesca Michielin, Italy 2016. Everyone is far away from each other and the staging will look empty from time to time.
The song from Poland wasn’t my style of music from the very first minute I heard it – and to be honest, is one of the few songs I skip when it comes up in my playlist. Watching the rehearsal of Tulia today doesn’t change my mind about the song, although I was glad by the background graphics.
Slovenia is almost the same situation with Poland. The song isn’t my cup of tea, but the staging made me fly in the stars. It didn’t come as a surprise the fact that they don’t have any dancer on stage… I mean listen to the song!
Czech Republic 🇨🇿
The Czech Republic gave us pretty much what we expected. A nice staging and good vocals. I have my concerns about the backing vocals – they sound as loud as the lead’s voice. Maybe I’m wrong… we gonna found out more on the second rehearsal.
Joci is familiar with the Eurovision stage. His song isn’t one of my favourites but in the more recent weeks, I started liking it – still not in my top-10 but have worked inside me! The background graphics are pretty good, but nothing new on the contest, the tree looks like Jamala’s one – Ukraine 2016. It’s a little bit funny, but I think that the staging will fit perfectly for the Armenian song back in 2015 – Genealogy, Face The Shadow.
Zena did a pretty good job in her first rehearsal. Her outfit was nice and fit perfectly in the song’s mood. The graphics remind me a lot of an MTV add and let’s face it “I Like It”. In general, the song is just exactly what a 16-year-old would sing!
Nevena delivered a perfect performance, with amazing vocals. Her outfit stayed in the same style as the one in the national performance but more glamorous.
That was my opinion about the first 9 rehearsals of the first semifinal. Tomorrow, the rest of the first semifinal’s countries – Belgium, Georgia, Australia, Ireland, Estonia, Portugal, Greece and San Marino – will perform their songs for the first time on the Eurovision stage.
