Winners Of The Decade! – Portugal 2017

On this new series of weekly posts, we remind you of the winners of the past decade! Can you believe it that another Eurovision decade has passed? The 10 songs that got the gold for their countries will be presented in random order!

In this decade we saw, of course, ten winners. From that number Sweden won two times. Azerbaijan and Portugal won for their first time and Germany and Austria for second time. The Netherlands won for the fifth time after 44 years! Moreover, Ukraine, Denmark and Israel mark their 2nd, 3rd and 4th win respectively. 

Portugal in ESC

Portugal debuted at the contest in 1964 with the song “Oração” by António Calvário. His entry finished 13th – last – with no points at all.

From 1964, until today Portugal has participated a total of fifty-one times, missing the contest five times – more recently in 2016. From the 51 contest, the country has missed the finals 9 times, making it only in 1996, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2017. The country has won only one time in 2017.

It has achieved the Top-10 ten times, one time the 1st, one time the 6th place and two times the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th place. Its worst result in the final is the final place. Portugal finished last 4 times, two of which with no points at all.

In 2017, the contest was held in Kyiv, Ukraine, after its last year’s win. Portugal chose its representative for the contest through a national final, Festival da Cancão. The winner of the national final was Salvador Sobral and his song was “Amar Pelos Dois”.

The song was composed by Luísa Sobral, Salvador’s older sister. The song came first in the semi with 370 points and on the night of the final achieved again the first place with 758 points.

Salvador Sobral

Salvador was born on 28th of December 1989, in Lisbon, Portugal. His full name is Salvador Vilar Braamcamp Sobral. He abandoned his studies at psychology in order to pursue his musical dream. In 2009, he competed in his country’s version of The Idol and finished 7th. Earlier this year, he released his second studio album.
