On this new series of weekly posts, we remind you of the winners of the past decade! Can you believe it that another Eurovision decade has passed? The 10 songs that got the gold for their countries will be presented in random order!
In this decade we saw, of course, ten winners. From that number Sweden won two times, Azerbaijan and Portugal won for their first time and Germany, Austria and the Netherlands won after and 40 years respectively! Moreover, Ukraine, Denmark and Israel mark their 2nd, 3rd and 4th win respectively.
The Netherlands in ESC
The Netherlands was among the seven countries, that took part in the first ever contest. Since then, the country has participated 60 times, missing the event only four times – 1985, 1991, 1995, 2002. In 1985 and 1991, the country withdrew from the contest the date of the final was the same dame with the Dutch Remembrance of the Dead. The other two times, the country wasn’t able to compete due to the rules of the contest.
The country has come first 5 times, in 1957, 1959, 1969, 1975 and more recently in 2019. The Netherlands has also come last 5 times too in 1958, 1962, 1963, 1968 and 2011 (in the Semifinal). From these years in 1962 and 1963, it failed to score any points at all.
Since the introduction of the semifinals, Netherlands didn’t manage to qualify for 8 years in a row, from 2005 until 2012 – that’s a Eurovision Record.
The Netherlands in 2019
In 2019, the contest was held in Tel Aviv, Israel, after its last year’s win. The Netherlands chose its representative for the contest through an internal selection.
The song was composed by Duncan de Moor (Duncan Laurence), Joel Sjöö, Wouter Hardy and Will Knox. The song came first in the semi with 280 points and on the night of the final achieved again the first place with 498 points.
Duncan was born on 11th of April 1994 in Spijkennise, Netherlands. His real name is Duncan de Moor. He has participated in the fifth season of The Voice of Holland. He managed to reach the semifinal, but then he was eliminated. Duncan has co-written a song for a K-POP duo too. In late October, he released a new single “Love Don’t Hate It”. Full profile here.
