Austria in ESC
Austria debuted at the contest in 1957, at the second edition of the contest, with the song “Wohin, kleines Pony?” by Bob Martin. His entry finished 10th – last – with 3 points.
From 1957, until today Austria has participated in a total of fifty-two times, missing the contest ten times – more recently in 2010. From the 52 contest, the country has missed the finals 5 times, missing it in 1995, 2007, 2012, 2013 and 2019. The country has won two times in 1966 and 2014.
It has achieved the Top-10 twenty-one times – excluding of course their first appearance – two times the 1st, one time the 3rd place and one time the 4th. It has also placed two times in 6th, 7th, 8th, three times in 9th place and four times in 5th and 10th. Its worst result in the final is the last place with no points (4 times), whilst in the semis, it has finished 18th with 8 points in 2012.
Austria in 2014
In 2014, the contest was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, after its last year’s win. Austria chose internally its representative for the contest. ORF announced Conchita as its representative as early as 10 September. The song “Rise Like A Phoenix” was released on a later day, on 18th March.
The song was composed by Charlie Mason, Joey Patulka, Ali Zuckowski and Julian Maas. The song came first in the semi with 169 points and on the night of the final achieved again the first place with 290 points.
Conchita Wurst is the drag act of Thomas Neuwirth. Thomas was born on 6th November 1988, in Gmunden, Austria. He was raised in Styria. At the age of 14, he moved to Graz to study fashion. In 2006 he participated at the third season of the Austria music show Starmania, where he finished third. At this point in his life, he started developing his drag persona. Conchita first appeared in the Austria talent show Die große Chance in 2011, where she finished 6th. In 2012, she tried to represent the country to the contest, but he came second.
In 2014, she won the contest with the song “Rise Like A Phoenix”. That was the first victory for the country since 1966. Western European countries gave Austria an average of 10.5 points each, while Eastern countries didn’t vote. Notable exceptions are Georgia and Lithuania, which gave 10 points to the song. Her participation boosted her career. Since 2014, she has released 3 studio albums – all entered the countries charts – with the most recent being released in October 2019.
