Eurovision: Should Broadcasters Organise National Finals?

EBU grants broadcasters the right to host national finals in order to select their representatives. Many countries organise a selection process – only in 2020 25 countries organise a national final for the artist, the song or both of them. In this series of posts, we analyse the results of the past decade.

Today, we analyse the two hundred qualified entries and the Top-10 placed countries of the past ten years. How many of them were selected through a national final? Does the national final guarantee a better placing?

Qualification & National Final

From all the qualified songs of the past decade, 123 entries were selected through a national final, whilst 17 entries were a combination of a national final and an internal selection.

There is no year that the entries that were selected through a national final didn’t overcome the entries that were selected internally.

TOP-10 & National Finals

Since 2010, from all the top-10 placed songs, 71 used a national final.

In 2016 and 2019 the TOP-10 entries that were selected through a national final were the same number as the ones that were internally selected. In all the other contests the artists that won a national final overcome the artists that were selected internally.

Note: The data were collected through the official site of the contest. Despite our best efforts, there might be some mistakes.
