It was 2011 when Italy return to the contest after a 14 year (!) absence. Since then the Mediterranean nation has finished in Top-10 seven out of their nine participations. In this series of posts, we gonna recall all the Italian entries of the past decade.
Italy In Eurovision 🇮🇹
Italy debuted in the contest in 1956, being one of the first 7 countries. Since then, it has participated 45 times, missing the event twice – 1981, 1982, 1986, 1994-1996 and 1998-2010 – without any specific explanation.
The country is part of the “Big 5”, so its prequalified to the grand final. The country has topped the scoreboard on 2 contests (1964 and 1990) and placed in the Top-10 33 times! The country’s most popular entry is Domenico Modugno’s 1958 “Nel blu, dipinto di blu” (Volare), which placed 3rd in the contest. Its worst result came in 2014 when it finished 21 with 33 points. The country has also placed last in 1966 with no points at all. Ironically, it was Domenico Modugno’s second attempt in the contest.
Italy In 2016
In 2016, Italy chose Francesca Michielin and her song “No Degree Of Separation”. The song is a combination of English and Italian.
The song was composed by Cheope, Fabio Gargiulo, Federica Abbate and Francesca Michielin. “No Degree Of Separation” placed 16th with 124 points.
Francesca Michielin was born on 25 February 1995, in Veneto, Italy. In 2011 she won the fifth season of the Italian version of X-Factor. Shortly after her victory she released her debut single which toped the Italian charts. A year later she released her debut album “Riflessi di me”. In 2016 she competed in the Festival Di Sanremo and came second. After the decline of the winning band Stadio to represent Italy at Stockholm, Francesca was selected by RAI. In Sweden, Francesca placed 16th in the final. Throughout the years she has released a total of 4 studio albums and 2 EPs. Her most recent album “Feat (stato di natura)” was released in March and reached the 7th place on the Italian charts.
