In 2013, the Junior Eurovision Song Contest was held in Kyiv, Ukraine. A total of 12 countries competed and the winner was Malta for the first time.

Malta in 2013, was represented by Gaia Cauchi and the song “The Start”. The entry received 138 points, with a margin of just 9 point from the second placer Ukraine.
