Country of the month is back. We decided to continue our series of articles “Country Of The Month” with Cyprus. In a period of four weeks, we are going to remind you of the best Cypriot entries. Note: we selected the entries not by their place in their final, but by their impact on the fans.

One – Gimme

In 2002, Cyprus selected One and their song “Gimme” to sent in Tallinn. The song is entirely in English.

It was composed by Giorgos Theofanous. At the final, the entry placed 6th with 85 points.

One is a Greek-Cypriot boy band that was formed in 1999. The band is considered to be the first boy band on both countries. It consists of five members: Constantinos Christoforou, Philippos Constantinos, Demetres Koutsavlakis, Argyris Nastopoulos and Panos Tserpes. The band is still active today, although it was disbanded in 2005 and reunited in 2019. The band is well-known in both Cyprus and Greece, having released a number of hits. In 2020, One tried to return in Eurovision with the song “Billy Bam Bam” for Greece. However, the Greek broadcaster chose Stefania.

Cyprus in the Eurovision

Cyprus debuted in the contest in 1981. Since then, it has participated 36 times, missing the contest in 1988, 2001 and 2014. In 1988, the country chose an entry but later the broadcaster withdrew it, after finding out that the song violated the national final’s rules. In 2001, the country didn’t participate due to its poor results to the contest. Under those year’s rules, the countries with the worst results were unable to compete the next year. In 2014, the country faced financial difficulties and the broadcaster decided to not take part.

Cyprus has placed in the Top-10 just ten times – considering its almost 40 participations. Also, it hasn’t qualified to the final on six times. The best entry of the country was in 2018 when it got 436 points and placed 2nd in the final. In contrast, Cyprus’ worst result in a final was 1988’s 20th place – last.

What do you think about the song? Do you like it? Do you think is it one of the most memorable entries from Cyprus? Let us know in the comment box below.
