Country of the month is back. We decided to continue our series of articles “Country Of The Month” with Italy. In a period of five weeks, we are going to remind you of the best Italian entries. Note: we selected the entries not by their place in their final, but by their impact on the fans.
Domenico Modugno – Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu
In 1958, Italy selected Domenico Modugno and his song “Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu” to sent in the Netherlands. The song is entirely in Italian.
It was composed by Domenico Modugno and the lyrics were written by Domenico Modugno and Franco Migliacci. The conductor of the live performance was Alberto Semprini. At the final, the entry placed 3rd with 13 points.
Domenico Modugno was born on January 9, 1928, in Apulia, Italy. He was an established singer, songwriter, actor, director, producer and politician. In 1958, he participated in the Sanremo Music Festival, where he won with the song “Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu”. The song entered Eurovision and came third. Despite not being the winning entry, the song managed not only to become a Eurovision classic but also won two Grammy Awards and entered the Billboard Hot 100. A year later, he won again Sanremo and placed 6th in Eurovision with “Piove (Ciao, Ciao, Bambina)”. In 1962, he won Sanremo with the song “Addio…, addio….”. In 1966, he competed for the last time in Eurovision and placed last (17th) with no points. He competed for a total of 12 times in Sanremo, won 4 times and came second 2 times. Throughout the years he appeared in 44 movies. He died at the age of 66 in 1994.
Italy in the Eurovision 🇮🇹
Italy debuted in the contest in 1956, being one of the first 7 countries. Since then, it has participated 45 times, missing the event a couple of times – 1981, 1982, 1986, 1994-1996 and 1998-2010 – without any specific explanation.
The country is part of the “Big 5”, so its prequalified to the grand final. The country has topped the scoreboard on 2 contests (1964 and 1990) and placed in the Top-10 33 times! The country’s most popular entry is Domenico Modugno’s 1958 “Nel blu, dipinto di blu” (Volare), which placed 3rd in the contest. Its worst result came in 2014 when it finished 21 with 33 points. The country has also placed last in 1966 with no points at all. Ironically, it was Domenico Modugno’s second attempt in the contest.
