Country of the month is back. We decided to continue our series of articles “Country Of The Month” with Italy. In a period of four weeks, we are going to remind you of the best Italian entries. Note: we selected the entries not by their place in their final, but by their impact on the fans.

Gigliola Cinquetti – Non Ho L’Età

In 1964, Italy selected Gigliola Cinquetti and her song “Non Ho L’Età” to sent in Copenhagen, Denmark. The song is entirely in Italian.

It was composed by Nicola Salerno, while the lyrics were written by Mario Panzeri. Conductor of the live performance was Gianfranco Monaldi. At the final, the entry placed 1st with 49 points.

Gigliola Cinquetti was born on December 20, 1947, in Verona, Italy. When she was just 16 years old, she won both Sanremo Music Festival and Eurovision with the song “Non Ho L’Età”. Thus she is the second youngest person to won the contest behind Sandra Kim. Her 1964 entry entered the Top-20 of many European countries. Gigliola has also recorded the song in 5 more languages (English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese). Ten years later, in 1974 she represented Italy again in Eurovision and placed second with the song “Si”.

Gigliola has participated in Sanremo Music Festival a total of 12 times, the most recent one in 1995. In 1991, she was one of the presenters of the show along with Toto Cotugno. Few days ago, she expressed her interest in appearing at the upcoming contest as an interval act.

Italy in the Eurovision

Italy debuted in the contest in 1956, being one of the first 7 countries. Since then, it has participated 45 times, missing the event a couple of times – 1981, 1982, 1986, 1994-1996 and 1998-2010 – without any specific explanation.

The country is part of the “Big 5”, so its prequalified to the grand final. The country has topped the scoreboard on 3 contests (1964, 1990 and 2021) and placed in the Top-10 34 times! The country’s most popular entry is Domenico Modugno’s 1958 “Nel blu, dipinto di blu” (Volare), which placed 3rd in the contest. Its worst result came in 2014 when it finished 21 with 33 points. The country has also placed last in 1966 with no points at all. Ironically, it was Domenico Modugno’s second attempt in the contest.
