In 2021, Iceland selected Daði og Gagnamagnið and their song “10 Years” to sent in Rotterdam. The song was entirely in English.

It was composed solely by Daði Freyr Pétursson. The entry reached the final of the contest, where it placed 4th with 378 points.

Daði og Gagnamagnið

Daði og Gagnamagnið is the Icelandic band that won the Söngvakeppnin, the Icelandic national final for Eurovision, in 2020 with their song “Thinking About Things”. After the contest’s cancellation, the band was internally selected for 2021. Their entry “10 Years” managed to placed 4th in the final. It is noteworthy that due to some band members being positive to COVID-19 during the contest’s week, their performance in both the semifinal and the final was from the rehearsals. Iceland in the Eurovision 🇮🇸

Iceland debuted in the contest in 1986. Since then, the country has participated 33 times. The only two times the country didn’t send an entry to the contest were in 1998 and 2002, due to the rules of the contest. Back then, prior to the introduction of the semifinals, there was an increased interest in the contest by a large number of countries. EBU, in order to cope with the number of participants, decided that the least successful countries of a given year would not be eligible to compete in the following year, giving the opportunity to other nations to enter the contest.

The country has failed to qualify seven times for the final – 2005-2007, 2012-2018. In 1989 and 2001 the country placed last in the final, making them the worst years for the country in the contest. Moreover, in 1989 the country didn’t manage to get a single point. The worst result of the country in a semifinal is the last place – 19th with 15 points – in 2018.

Iceland has never won the contest but has reached the 2nd place two times (1999, 2009) and on 5 more occasions, it has reached the Top-10. That makes Iceland the second most successful country in the contest that has never won.
