Today, it was announced that the upcoming Melodifestivalen will be different from the past editions.
More specifically, the Andra Chansen round will now be a Semi-final. The 3rd and 4th placers of each semifinal will secure a place in the new “Semi-final 5”. At this semi-final, 8 songs will compete in two separate groups. The two top-placers of each group will advance to the final.
That’s the first major change at the beloved Swedish show since 2015, when the number of competing entries reduced from 32 to 28 and the number of acts that advanced to the final from second chance round increased from 2 to 4. The Second Chance round was introduced in early 2000’s along with the semifinals of the contest.
Melodifestivalen will premiere on February 5 in Malmö. The show will be host by Oscar Zia!
