Söngvakeppnin returned this year as the Icelandic national selection!

Iceland this year selected its Eurovision participant, as usual, through Söngvakeppnin. The national final dates back in 1986, when the country first participated at Eurovision. Björg Magnúsdóttir, Jón Jónsson and Ragnhildur Steinunn Jónsdóttir hosted the show.

The show consisted of two semifinals – February 26, March 5. The final took place tonight. At the first phase of the final both a jury and the public voted. The top-2 artists proceeded in the Gold Final, where the public decided the winner.

The winner of the show were Sigga, Beta & Elín with their entry “Með hækkandi sól”!

Iceland in the Eurovision 🇮🇸

Iceland debuted in the contest in 1986. Since then, the country has participated 34 times. The only two times the country didn’t send an entry to the contest were in 1998 and 2002, due to the rules of the contest. Back then, prior to the introduction of the semifinals, there was an increased interest in the contest by a large number of countries. EBU, in order to cope with the number of participants, decided that the least successful countries of a given year would not be eligible to compete in the following year, giving the opportunity to other nations to enter the contest.

The country has failed to qualify seven times for the final – 2005-2007, 2012-2018. In 1989 and 2001 the country placed last in the final, making them the worst years for the country in the contest. Moreover, in 1989 the country didn’t manage to get a single point. The worst result of the country in a semifinal is the last place – 19th with 15 points – in 2018.

Iceland has never won the contest but has reached the 2nd place two times (1999, 2009) and on 6 more occasions, it has reached the Top-10. That makes Iceland the second most successful country in the contest that has never won.
