Country Of The Month: The Netherlands Part 3

Introduction

We decided to start our new series of articles “Country Of The Month” with the 2019 winning country the Netherlands. In a period of five weeks, we are going to remind you of the best Dutch entries. Note: we selected the entries not by their place in their final, but by their impact in the fans.

Anouk – Birds

In 2013, the Netherlands chose Anouk to represent it in the 58th Eurovision Song Contest. Anouk was selected internally along with her song “Birds” by the participating organiser TROS.

The song “Birds”, was composed by Tore Johansson, Martin Gjerstad and Anouk Teeuwe. The song was broadcasted for the first time, in an Anouk’s radio interview on a Dutch Radio in November 2011. That was against the rules of the contest. Although, from this year and on EBU decided that if the broadcast of the song didn’t give advantage to it, then it can participate. The song finished 9th with 114 points and entered the Top-5 of three countries, Netherlands’, Iceland’s and Sweden’s.

Anouk was born in 1975 in The Hague, Netherlands. Her full name is Anouk Teeuwe. She is an established artist in her country and the whole Europe. She is well-known for her rock vibes in her songs. She released her first Dutch-language in 2018. Anouk is a mother of 6 children!

We selected this entry for one simple reason… Because it reminded us that the Dutch are still a participating country. After 9 years of eliminations, for the first time, the country not only made it to the final but in the Top-10 too!

The Netherlands in the Eurovision 🇳🇱

The Netherlands was among the seven countries, that took part in the first ever contest. Since then, the country has participated 60 times, missing the event only four times – 1985, 1991, 1995, 2002. In 1985 and 1991, the country withdrew from the contest the date of the final was the same dame with the Dutch Remembrance of the Dead. The other two times, the country wasn’t able to compete due to the rules of the contest.

The country has come first 5 times, in 1957, 1959, 1969, 1975 and more recently in 2019. The Netherlands has also come last 5 times too in 1958, 1962, 1963, 1968 and 2011 (in the Semifinal). From these years in 1962 and 1963, it failed to score any points at all.

Since the introduction of the semifinals, Netherlands didn’t manage to qualify for 8 years in a row, from 2005 until 2012 – that’s a Eurovision Record.
