Montenegro returned to the contest, after missing the contest in 2020 and 2021. Armenia also returned after a one year break. In 2022, no country will debut. Moreover, Belarus is expelled from the contest due to the political situation of the country.

This year, the contest will see its shortest final since 2011 with 25 competing finalists. Italy is a Big 5 nation, thus it is already a prequalified nation.
